Strategic planning and support for the Principal and his staff – that’s the key role of the governors of Manor CE Academy.
It’s the governors who set the admissions policy, monitor finances and also look at the academy’s Christian ethos.
Manor’s governors have a wide and interesting range of backgrounds and experience upon which to draw when making policy decisions.
Manor is a Church of England Academy and the majority of the governors are appointed by the Diocese of York. Others are appointed by the local authority, and staff and parents each elect three from among their number to join the full governing board. The governors also enjoy the expertise and support of three attendee governors, who do not have voting rights but who make an invaluable contribution.
Appointed for a four-year term of office, governors attend five full governing board meetings a year. In addition, there are three annual strategy mornings to discuss the academy’s vision and future plans.
Governors are also allocated to sub-committees that deal with the day-to-day running of the academy. Currently, there are five sub-committees: Finance, Attainment & Learning, Student Welfare, Staffing and Premises. Each committee meets five times a year.
Another role each governor undertakes is as a link to a particular academic department, visiting regularly and building up a supportive relationship with the staff. These links allow governors to take part in lessons, talk with the students, analyse the department’s achievements and understand their needs. The governors are then able to report back to the full governing body with confidence.
However, being a governor is not all work: they enjoy attending the annual presentation evening, the Minster carol service, the senior citizens’ Christmas lunch and the many plays, concerts, presentations and sports events to which they are invited.
